Best Supermarket Stocks To Invest In 2014

It's been so long that inflation has been largely under control in Western economies that many investors and analysts have not directly experienced its impact on everyday life. As I visit my local grocery store and throw my favorite shopping items into the basket, I tend not to check the current prices; I've become accustomed to fairly steady, slowly upward prices for a long time now.

Apart from a sudden pick-up in certain agricultural commodity prices around 2007, milk being one example that comes to mind, my time spent at the local supermarket has been largely predictable and uneventful for many years.

But as the third round of the Fed's easing policy continues for a while longer, economists and analysts foresee rising inflation as one of the primary risks from what has been described by Pimco's Mohamed El-Erian as ''an unprecedented high-stakes experiment'.' And the printing press has been working overtime not only in the U.S., but also of course in the UK, Europe and Japan as well.

It's no big secret that global semiconductor leaderIntel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) wants to breakdesperatelyinto the growing parts of its industry. However, in ourincreasinglymobile world, things like power consumption matter just as much as, if not more than, performance. And although Intel has seen the error in its ways to an extent, there remains an uphill battle to unseat many of the entrenched players. Its Haswell line of chips, representing Intel's next great attempt to solve this problem, certainly seems promising. However they might not be the game-changer Intel would have investors believe. Advisors' Opinion:

Solitron (SODI) sells at 74% of NCAV, has decent z- and f-scores, a FCF margin of 5.3% and an ROA of 12%.

Micropac (MPAD) sells at 83% of NCAV, has similar (slightly better) z- and f-scores, a FCF margin of 6%, but has ROA of 28%.

ADDvantage (AEY) sells at 95% of NCAV, has similar (in the ballpark) scores and FCF and ROA of 23%.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] strong>OPT-Sciences (OPST)

    Micropac

Micropac is 76% owned by Heinz-Werner Hempel. He a German businessman. You can see the German company he founded here. He had control of Micropac for a long-time. I don have an exact number in front of me. But I would guess it been something like 25 years.

    ADDvantage

ADDvantage Technologies is controlled by the Chymiak brothers. See the company April 4 press release explaining their decision to turn over the CEO position to an outsider. Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company chief technology officer. Clearly, it still their company.

By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

That pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here and even though 70% of the company shares are not held by the CEO wee still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

In fact, profitable net-nets seem to be especially common candidates for abandoning the responsibilities of a public company without actually getting taken private.

Phosphorescent Organic Light Emitting Diode Technologies

Phosphorescent OLEDs utilize specialized materials and device structures that allow OLEDs to emit light through a process known as phosphorescence. Traditional fluorescent OLEDs emit light through an inherently less efficient process. Theory and experiment show that phosphorescent OLEDs exhibit device efficiencies up to four times higher than those exhibited by fluorescent OLEDs. Phosphorescence substantially reduces the power requirements of an OLED and is potentially useful in displays for hand-held devices, such as Smartphone, where battery power is often a limiting factor. Phosphorescence is also important for area displays such as televisions, where higher device efficiency and lower heat generation may enable longer ! product lifetimes and increased energy efficiency.

Additional Proprietary Organic Light Emitting Diode Technologies

Additional OLED Technologies include FOLED Flexible OLEDs, Thin-Film Encapsulation, UniversalP2OLED Printable Phosphorescent OLEDs, OVJP Organic Vapor Jet Printing, OVPD Organic Vapor Phase Deposition and TOLED Transparent OLEDs. Universal Display Corporation.A world leader in the development of innovative organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology for use in flat panel displays, lighting and organic electronics, Universal Display Corporation also has one of the largest patent portfolios in the OLED field with licensing rights to over 1,000 issued and pending patents worldwide in a broad array of OLED technologies, materials and processes. At the beginning of the month, Universal Display Corporation shares dropped as much as 10% to close down 6% after being downgraded to sell from holdby Jonathan Dorsheimer atCanaccord Genuity because he says that his most bullish case for what the company would make off of television set, smartphone and tablet use of OLED materials doesn support the company valuation. In addition, Canaccord Genuity meetings in Europe and Asiaindicated increased competition and a pushed out TV opportunity plus theylearned that both LG and Samsung have development programs to manufacture their own phosphorescent materials when Universal Displays patents begin to expire in 2017. Otherwise, Universal Display Corporation is scheduled to report earnings on Thursday, November 7, after the market closes. On Tuesday, small cap Universal Display Corporation rose 0.03% to $31.08 (OLED has a 52 week trading range of $21.55 to $38.10 a share) for market cap of $1.44 billion plus the stock is up 26.3% since the start of the year, down 3.7% over the past year and up 192.9% over the past five years.

Cook also noted certain weaknesses such as color saturation and brightness with OLED displays back in February at a Goldman Sachs conference, which sent shares of Universal Display (NASDAQ: OLED  ) reeling briefly before the OLED specialist recovered. That was likely a knock directed more in Samsung's direction, since the South Korean company is the biggest proponent of OLED displays in mobile devices, but Samsung is also Universal Display's biggest customer. Universal Display simply got caught in the crossfire.

ADDvantage (AEY) sells at 95% of NCAV, has similar (in the ballpark) scores and FCF and ROA of 23%.

The slightly better businesses are currently more expensive in terms of price/NCAV. They have less asset-based downside protection, but they are better businesses.

How do you quantify and qualify what is cheap enough? To me, there's a big difference in relative cheapness in a company selling at 74% of NCAV versus one selling at 95%. I'm wondering if I'm putting too much weight on this cheapness measurement instead of acknowledging that any decent business selling at less than NCAV is cheap enough. Yet, one has to have some quantifiable idea of when something is not cheap enough anymore.

Can you help me put this into a unified framework?

A Strong U.S. Dollar vs. Corporate Profit

It's a miserable day for U.S. equities, but the U.S. dollar continued its climb, rising to its highest level against the Euro in almost two years.

That's great news for some. But the folks at Briefing.com bring up an interesting point. What does a strong U.S. dollar mean for corporate profit?

Remember, while membership in the S&P 500 requires a U.S. domicile, more than half of the revenue generated by its members comes from outside the U.S. A strengthening U.S. dollar can squeeze overseas revenue and dim earnings prospects.

As Briefing.com writes:

The US Dollar Index has seen a huge move in the third quarter, rising 6.9% to leave it up 6.5% for the year.  The bulk of that quarterly gain has come in the latter half of the quarter as the euro, pound, and yen have fallen out of bed with currency traders.

The latter point notwithstanding, the average value of the euro and British pound is still higher than it was in the third quarter of 2013.  Accordingly, we wouldn’t expect US companies with exposure to those currencies to cite the dollar’s strength as a real drag on third quarter results.

We would, however, expect them to suggest ongoing strength in the dollar will be a headwind in the fourth quarter.   To that end, bear in mind that the US Dollar Index averaged 80.39 in the fourth quarter of 2013 and 80.36 in the first quarter of 2014.

Top 5 Performing Stocks To Invest In Right Now

With the euro dropping to a 22-month low today against the greenback, it’s little surprise to see companies like McDonald’s (MCD), Philip Morris International. (PM) and Pall (PLL),  which derived more than 40% of their revenue from Europe over the last 12 months, put in some lackluster showings.

Richmont Mines (RIC) engages in the mining, exploration and development of mining properties, principally gold in Canada. This stock closed up 2.4% to $1.68 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.61-$1.68

    52-Week Range: $1.31-$5.50

    Tuesday's Volume: 76,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 101,786

From a technical perspective, RIC bounced higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $1.59 with decent upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.71. During that move, shares of RIC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of RIC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if RIC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.71 to $1.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RIC as long as it's trending above i! ts 50-day at $1.59 or above more near-term support levels at $1.50 to $1.44 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 101,786 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then RIC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.10 to $2.20. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give RIC a chance to tag its 200-day moving average at $2.48.

The report analyzed the ratings that expert reviewers gave smartphone models and compared them to consumers' ratings of the same. It found that some phones that get very high ratings from expert reviewers don't get the same glowing reviews from users. For example, expert reviewers thought the Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II was a fantastic phone. It received a rating of 88 out of 100 on FindTheBest, a website that aggregates and analyzes ratings from tech review sites. However, smartphone users gave the phone a rating of 2.5 out of 5. The reverse held true in some cases. Although expert reviewers gave the LG Optimus Elite (LG) a low rating -- 48 out of 100 -- the same phone got an average rating of 4 out of 5 from users. Inca Minerals Limited, formerly Condor Metals Limited, is an Australia-based exploration company. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011 (fiscal 2011), the Company's principal activities were conducting exploration and evaluation work on its existing tenements, as well as seeking out additional tenements. It focuses on nickel, iron, manganese and base metals exploration in Australia. During fiscal 2011, it concentrated on the Kallona iron and manganese prospect in the East Pilbar, where the first drilling was commenced in June 2011. Results received confirmed the presence of manganese, along with consistent iron intersections. The Company also continued to explore on the Dingo Range tenements south east of Wiluna. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Fede Zaldua]

For its third quarter, Citi reported net earnings of $3.2 billion or Earnings Per Share (EPS) of $1, which was just below consensus expectations of $1.02 per share. The bank explained its poor performance through lower than expected earnings at the Institutional Clients Group (ICG) division (mainly trading activities in equities, commodities and fixed income) but also lower Consumer Banking revenues on weaker mortgage results. Its extremely relevant to stress that third quarter ICG and mortgage related results came weaker than expected at most banking institutions, including JP Morgan (JPM) and almighty Goldman Sachs (GS). On my opinion, much more relevant metrics (because they can be more directly affected by management's decisions) such as those metrics related to expenses and credit quality came in line with expectations.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

What: Shares of glass-product maker Apogee Enterprises (NASDAQ: APOG  ) fell 10% today after releasing fiscal fourth quarter earnings.

So what: Revenue increased 7%, to $179.7 million, which was in-line with expectations. Net income jumped 48%, to $4.4 million, or $0.15 per share, but that fell $0.02 short of estimates, and that's why the stock is down today. For fiscal 2014, the company expects to earn $0.90 to $1.00 per share from continuing operations, which compares to the $0.97 estimate.

I went out on a limb last week, and now it's time to see how that decision played out.

I predicted that Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) would close higher on the week. The consumer-tech giant was approaching new lows, and it seemed as if the fears of its demise and hype over recently introduced smartphones were overblown. Apple shares benefited from a bullish week of trading, climbing 1.6% on the week. I was right. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, the market rallied in a major way this week, with secondary stocks leading the way. The Nasdaq soared 2.8% on the week. The Dow managed to close just 2.1% higher. I was right. My final call was for Apogee (NASDAQ: APOG  ) to beat Wall Street's quarterly profit target. The maker of value-added glass products for the architectural and picture framing industries has been beating Wall Street estimates consistently over the past year. Why should that end? Analysts were looking for a profit of $0.17 a share during the quarter, and it came through with net income of $0.15. I was wrong.

Two out of three? I can do better than that. Let me once again whip out my trusty, dusty, and occasionally accurate crystal ball to make three calls that may play out over the next few trading days.

  • [By Rich Smith]

I won't deny it: I've been a longtime fan of glassmaker Apogee Enterprises (NASDAQ: APOG  ) . Years ago, when the company decided to forgo some revenue by exiting the market for automotive windshields and focus instead on making higher-margin glass for building windows and picture framing, I thought that was the right call.
