Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) are making big bets on the type of content they offer, as more consumers choose video streaming services over traditional pay cable. Amazon signed a multi-year deal with Viacom (NASDAQ: VIAB  ) this week, in an effort to beef up its video library ahead of competitors. Meanwhile, both Netflix and Amazon are also heavily investing in original content. Let's take a deeper look at whether more content, or original content, is better for subscriber growth.

Pricey content deals
The reluctance of Netflix to renew its agreement with Viacom gives Amazon a leg up in the digital content wars. However, Netflix's decision is also understandable, given the disturbingly high cost of programming these days. For example, Amazon is reportedly coughing up more than $200 million for its new licensing agreement with Viacom, according to Reuters. That would make this Amazon's priciest content deal to date.

Deckers (NASDAQ: DECK  ) has had to deal with investors' skepticism about whether its UGG line of footwear can avoid the same fate that fad products from other companies have suffered in years past, but value investor Whitney Tilson notes that many UGG buyers see their shoes as a utilitarian rather than a fashion choice. Meanwhile, Saucony gives Wolverine an entry into the athletic shoe industry, but Nike (NYSE: NKE  ) continues to dominate the industry with its strong gross margins. Swank (SNKI) was also a net-net that looks like it�� going to be bought out. Last I heard, they received an alternative proposal during their ��o shop��period and haven�� acted on it. The Ben Graham: Net-Net Newsletter�� model portfolio doesn�� own either stock. Though we do own another net-net where a company in the same industry bought a block of shares. Who knows what that means. But clearly net-nets sometimes attract control buyers.

    Arlington Asset Investment (NYSE: AI  ) continues to distribute some of its take in the form of shareholder payouts. The company has declared a dividend for its Q2 of $0.875 per share. This will be paid on July 31 to shareholders of record as of June 28. That amount matches each of the firm's preceding quarterly distributions stretching back to mid-2011. Prior to that, it handed out $0.75 per share.
