Hot Undervalued Stocks For 2014

Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) is often overlooked by individual investors who tend to focus on hotter trending tech names such as Google (GOOG) or Facebook (FB). However, this shouldn't be the case as the 3 month average volume for Yahoo (largely from institutional investors) has been 17 million shares, with a market cap of $27.6 billion, and a share price that is up 80.76% in its last 12 months (as of the end of Thursday, 22nd August 2013). With an increase like that, is it possible that the share price is still undervalued? I believe so. A good indicator is the recent news from ComScore, which indicates that Yahoo topped Google in the U.S. for Web Traffic in July, 2013 (the first time since May, 2011). The past eighteen years for Yahoo! Inc., haven't exactly been smooth sailing, and the recent efforts from Yahoo certainly deserve applause as they've been steadily marching forward with their turnaround.

Competition:

Competition to attract users is fierce from AOL and Google. Quarterly revenue growth for Yahoo is negative (a comparison to AOL and Google is below). Having said that, Yahoo looks attractive with Low P/E (TTM) ratio and greater 5-year PEG.

Earnings season has hit the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) with a pair of misses today, as both AT&T (NYSE: T  ) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) couldn't live up to Wall Street's expectations. The blue-chip index has fallen about 49 points as of 2:20 p.m. EDT, with the two earnings losers leading a large cadre of stocks lower. Let's catch up on all the stories and movers you need to know from around the Dow.

    Today's Dow leader
Today's Dow leader is Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , up 1.2%. This month the company has taken some heat from short-sellers who panned the company because they believe it will suffer from a slowdown in demand in China. Lending credence to that view was Caterpillar's poor earnings report last week, which showed a 43% drop in income. The stock sold off slightly, finishing down 4% for the week -- the worst performance of any Dow component. In what appears to be an effort to appease shareholders, today Caterpillar announced a $1 billion accelerated share-buyback at market prices. The question investors need to ask themselves is whether Caterpillar is buying at an opportune time or simply trying to appease shareholders in the short run. One Fool contributor believes you shouldn't give up on Caterpillar stock just yet.

Can you really take a company's yearly guidance seriously? Who can predict future events a year from now? It's so hard most companies skip the ordeal. Who can blame them? So many unforeseen events can derail a company's guidance. Yet, a few daredevil companies continue giving their yearly outlook. As far as I'm concerned, that's akin to writing the front page of next year's Wall Street Journal. I've already highlighted how Caterpillar (CAT) and Parker Hannifin (PH) - two excellent companies - almost never get their yearly guidance right.

In contrast, Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) booked an expansion of profits, to 35.2%, continuing a trend that's seen it pull away from Family Dollar.

Schlumberger (SLB) was a top performer during the quarter, continuing its strong performance since the summer of 2012. Since late June 2012 (6/22) through mid-颅April 2014, the stock (a holding since late September 2011) is up approximately 60% -颅nearly double the S&P 500 Index's gain of 36%. Schlumberger continues to do what it does best dominate their respective industry and generate industry-颅leading growth and cash flow generation. The Company is a leading global provider of oil services. At the risk of repeating an oil service industry clich茅, "the easy oil has been found." The technological development being brought to bear to the extremes and complexities in the exploration and development of hydrocarbon energy is relentless. The Company's depth and breadth of their integrated products and services has been at the forefront of the unceasing progress of energy services for decades. Indeed, according to the Company, over the past decade, total E&P capital expenditures have increased by 400%, yet global oil production is up only a scant 15%. Furthermore, in just the last three years, the upstream E&P industry has spent on average $600 billion per year yielding only a net increase in global oil production coming from the shale deposits in North American. Due to the significant advancements in horizontal drilling and multistage fracking natural gas prices are generally one-颅hird of what they are in Europe or Asia. This differential has had 2 profound implications, for instance in the U.S. chemical industry. Circa-颅014 finds the Company at the cutting edge in the continued search for unconventional oil and gas, plus in the environmentally challenging area in offshore and deepwater. The Company continues to enhance their capabilities, scale and integra

Bloomberg via Getty Images You can never know in advance all the news that will move the market in a given week, but some things you can see coming. From a parade of bankers' earnings to a pizza giant rolling out a new crust, here are some of the things that will help shape the week ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- X Marks the Spot: Data storage is a big part of businesses in the modern age; companies have massive amounts of information to manage and keep secure. Xyratex (XRTX) may not be a household name, but it is well-known to corporate IT departments seeking enterprise data storage solutions. Xyratex reports on Monday afternoon. It's seen better days, and analysts predict it will report a sharp drop in revenue. However, Xyratex has been able to beat Wall Street's profit targets with ease over the past four quarters. Tuesday -- Big Banking's Big Close Up: It's going to be a roll call of the "too big to fail" banking behemoths as they step up for their quarterly results. Wells Fargo (WFC) and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) kick things off on Tuesday. That will be followed by Bank of America (BAC) on Wednesday. Citigroup (C) and Goldman Sachs (GS) step up on Thursday. These are interesting times for the financial services providers. Interest rates are starting to move higher, and that may get in the way of demand for mortgages, but it will also help improve the chances that customers open and fund savings and checking accounts. Wednesday -- Tracking Trains: Railroads may seem like yesterday's mode of transportation, but rail remains a viable way to get goods moving across the country. CSX (CSX) reports on Wednesday. The provider of rail, intermodal, and rail-to-truck transload services and solutions has been shipping goods for 185 years. It offers coverage through every major metropolitan market in the eastern United States. Analysts see revenue inching up by 3 percent, with CSX's profit of $0.42 a share besting the $0.40 a share it posted a year earlier. CSX will

Surprisingly, our energy boom could help China, but not in the way you might think. The energy sector in the U.S. has been an incubator for innovative drilling techniques and technologies over the past few years. Now we have a near monopoly on the technology. Like the U.S., China has massive shale gas deposits, and the technology we possess could help them develop domestic sources and allow them to become more energy self-sufficient. We're starting to see it happen. Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-A  ) has signed a deal with PetroChina (NYSE: PTR  ) to spend $1 billion a year to develop shale resources there. Also, frackingspecialistsHaliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) are partnering with various Chinese companies to supply the country with hydraulic fracturing equipment and specialty fluids.
