Hot Quality Stocks To Own For 2014

Modules of Canadian Solar Inc. (CSIQ) have been selected by Argand Energy Solutions for their solar project located in Louisburg, NC. In collaboration with Horne Brothers Construction, Inc., Argand Energy Solutions began construction of the 2.3 megawatt (MW) project in Jun 2013. System grid connection is scheduled for Aug 2013.

The utility solar power system will utilize approximately 7,700 of Canadian Solar's CS6X-300P photovoltaic (PV) modules. CS6X-300P PV modules are polycrystalline silicon modules that carry a warranty period of 10 years on materials and workmanship and a 25-year warranty on linear power output performance.

With power tolerances in the range of 0% to 2.0%, these modules have maximum system voltage of 1000V. With respect to quality control inspections and testing, these modules have received key international certifications. Post completion, these highly efficient modules will allow the project to power approximately 460 homes.

While the project will help in reducing the use of carbon based fuels in the U.S., it will help Canadian Solar in expanding its footprint in the U.S solar market. We however note that like its peers Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (STP) and LDK Solar Co., Ltd. (LDK), Canadian Solar is also subject to anti-dumping and countervailing duties in the U.S.

Wal-Mart ranks firstamong U.S. companies for on-site green power generation. WhileIntel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) lays claim to impressive statistics like "100% green power use", it achieves that percentage primarily by buying renewable energy credits. Wal-Mart has 180 renewable energy projects around the world, including more than 150 solar installations and 26 fuel cell projects. The company's goal for 2013 is to bring solar power to 100 more store sites. Solar City (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) does the bulk of the Wal-Mart's installations, if investors are interested in that angle.

After a banner 2013, the overall market has had a challenging start to 2014. However, these four companies have been crushing it: Alexander Real Estate (NYSE: ARE  ) , BioMed Realty Trust (NYSE: BMR  ) , CommonWealth REIT (NYSE: CWH  ) , and Sun Communities (NYSE: SUI  ) early on in 2014 vs. the S&P 500. Their relative out-performance can also be seen when compared to the Vanguard REIT Index ETF (NYSEMKT: VNQ  ) a good yardstick to measure sector performance.

Small cap Biomed Realty Trust Inc (NYSE: BMR) is a real estate investment trust (REIT) offering an alternative way to gain exposure to the biotech or life sciences sector, meaning it might be worth taking a closer look at it along with a few benchmarks like the Vanguard REIT ETF (NYSEARCA: VNQ), iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology Index ETF (NASDAQ: IBB) and SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (NYSEARCA: XBI). Of course, it should be mentioned that REITs have had a rough ride latelygiven all the aperingtalk, but there is still a place for them in your portfolio with Biomed Realty Trust being one of the more unique offerings.

Advisors' Opinion:

In Thursday's ETF analysis, evidence is presented that supports increasing demand for assets that get a tailwind from a weak U.S. dollar, including emerging markets (EEM) and foreign stocks (EFA). Casting a wider economic net, our market model told us to start buying stocks last week even with the threat of a U.S. default. Wednesday, we continued with our incremental allocation shifts by adding some exposure to the energy sector. Thursday, we sat tight holding long positions in small caps (IJR), Europe (FEZ), emerging markets and technology (QQQ). The upper bounds of the bullish S&P 500 trend channel shown below may offer some resistance to the market's near vertical ascent.

The news out of the Eurozone continues to improve as their Purchasing Managers Index rose to 51.7 in August consistent with an expanding economy. The chart shows a nice trend here suggesting that the worst by indeed be over. A deeper pullback in some of the euro ETFs like SPDR Euro STOXX 50 ETF (FEZ) should create a buying opportunity.
