Post-scriptum: Wow! In a recent Bloomberg article, Andrew Gracie, an executive director at the Bank of England (BoE), was proposing that in the event of a bank failure, regulators could suspend derivatives contracts affecting the failed bank on a global basis.4 He further argues that he entry of a bank into resolution should not in itself be an event of default In other words, the solution proposed by the BoE to deal with a bank that fails and that has entered in a mountain of derivatives contracts is to suspend the market.

Due to the impact of The Great Recession, stocks in the agricultural sector such as Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT), The Mosiac Company (NYSE: MOS), and Potash of Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT) are trading well below highs. The exchange traded fund for the industry, DBA Power Shares, (NYSE: DBA), is down more than 17% for the last year. Despite this bearish trend, legendary investors such as Warren Buffett, George Soros, and Jim Rogers are very positive for the agriculture group. With the long term bullish outlook for the sector from the greatest investors in history, small cap stocks active in the fertilizer sector such as Sirius Minerals (LSE: SXX) and Americas Petrogas (TSX: BOE) are especially attractive.

I'll warn you now that if you're a fan or shareholder of Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK), then you're not going to like what you're about to read. Before you fly off into a tirade of "colorful" descriptions of me, however, know that this is neither a judgment call on the company itself, nor a long-term outlook. It's simply a trading-based observation of hints that SBLK has dropped today. Fair enough? OK, let's dig in.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

It's certainly no Safe Bulkers, Inc. (NYSE:SB) or Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK), in terms or market cap or revenue. In fact, even with the drybulk shipping industry it's a somewhat obscure name. Yet, FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE) may well be the stock with the most near-term potential upside, now that it's gotten over a key technical hump.

    American Express (NYSE: AXP  )
AmEx cardholders have excellent credit, which lowers default risk and raises average spending. The model is similar to Buffett's auto insurance company, GEICO, which targets responsible drivers in order to reduce claims. Way back in 1964, shares of American Express plummeted after the company vouched for a vegetable oil company that took out large loans by falsifying collateral. American Express lost millions, and investors panicked, but Buffett considered it only a temporary setback. Ever greedy when others are fearful, Buffett recognized the long-term prospects of the company and started buying shares.

  • [By John Divine]

American Express (NYSE: AXP  ) ticked up for a second straight day, adding 1.8%. While yesterday's gains were partially because of favorable comments made by a hedge fund manager about financial stocks, today's gains may actually be due to some refinancing moves American Express made. It will issue $1.85 billion in low-interest five-year notes in order to pay back $1 billion worth of debt costing nearly 5%.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

There will soon be a new name next to the CFO title at American Express (NYSE: AXP  ) . The company announced it has appointed Jeffrey Campbell to lead its finance team. He succeeds Daniel Henry, who is to retire later this year following a 23-year stint with the company. Campbell will join the firm next month as executive vice president, finance, and take up his CFO responsibilities in August. In addition to those two positions, he will also be a member of the financial services giant's operating committee.
