Top China Stocks To Invest In 2014

Probably shouldn’t have triple-mortgaged the house in Dongguan in order to redo the condo in Tianjin with bamboo flooring.

If it sounds vaguely familiar, it’s what too many Americans experienced in 2008. Now it’s China’s turn. The housing market there is in turmoil, reminiscient of the subprime issues faced in this country, according to Mark Mobius.

While China's housing market problems are similar in scale to those faced during the U.S. subprime mortgage bubble, it won't lead to another Lehman Brothers-style crash, Mobius, the emerging-market fund manager at Franklin Templeton, told CNBC on Monday.

“The similarities could not be denied,” Mobius said, but since Chinese banks are owned by the government, they will not be allowed to fail.

The network notes investor fears have been heightened after a credit crunch last week led to a spike in yields on interbank loans. Some analysts have pointed out the credit crunch was spiked by the Chinese central bank's tightening of liquidity, rather than a loss in confidence among banks.

Yanzhou Coal Mining (YZC) engages in the underground coal mining, as well as preparation, processing, sale and railway transportation of coal. This stock closed up 7.6% to $7.31 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $7.14-$7.31

    52-Week Range: $6.68-$18.57

    Thursday's Volume: 391,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 370,383

From a technical perspective, YZC bounced sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $6.77 with above-average volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last six months, with shares plunging from its high of over $14 to its recent low of $6.68. During that move, shares of YZC have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of YZC have recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $6.68 to $6.77. This stock now looks ready to reverse that downtrend and possibly trigger a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if YZC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.76 to $8 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in YZC as long as it's trending above its recent low of $6.77 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 370,383 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then YZC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9 to $10. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give YZC a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10.67 to $11.11.

    Valuation

Over the next five years growth in the Asian market will likely boost the overall modest premium growth rate, averaging it at 2%, while the total revenue CAGR recovers to 3% after the steep declines reported since 2012. Furthermore, Manulife ROE will continue its current upward trend, increasing from 2013 10.9% to an average 12% by 2018, accompanied by the steadily expanding net margins of 16.8%. While it will take some time for the company growth to accelerate, I feel bullish about management optimism regarding its business shift, and see the dividend yield and returns on equity as solid benefits for a long term investment. Moreover, the firm is currently trading at a 10% price discount relative to the industry average of 14.0x, making it a relatively inexpensive buy.

I have heard many people comment about the insurance policies for cars, houses, life, assets, etc. The arguments always revolve around the same issue: Is it really necessary? What are the chances to be hit by a Hurricane, or to meet a sudden death? Well, nobody really knows. Some individuals however, sleep better when they know a policy backs their life investments. Here, I will look into three insurance companies that concentrate on different policies, or geographies. These are: China Life (LFC), and Conseco (CNO).

Hot Diversified Bank Stocks To Invest In 2014

Pick a mining stock, any mining stock, and there’s a very good chance that its future earnings are highly dependent on commodity prices. Rio Tinto (RIO) and Vale (VALE)? That’s iron ore. Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX)? That’s copper. Alcoa (AA)? That’s aluminum.

Reuters

The problem: Analysts are really bad at predicting commodity prices, which inevitably leads to earnings forecasts being wrong as well. Bernstein’s Paul Gait and team explain:

Over the last ten years, consensus has been the best at forecasting prices for aluminium, zinc and nickel and the worst at forecasting copper, iron ore, gold and silver. The average error over a 1 year time frame for aluminium has been 4%, and over a 2 year period 5%. For Zinc this is 2% and 4%, Nickel 5% and 3%. By contrast, the error on the copper forecast has averaged -7% and -19% and iron ore -8% and -21% for 1 and 2 year horizons, respectively. This suggests that a counter consensus view on aluminium, zinc and nickel prices is unlikely to be the correct course of action, while it for copper and iron ore one has to be contrarian to stand any chance of being right. In other words, the pricing dynamic of aluminium, zinc and nickel appears to be well understood while the market still finds copper and iron ore opaque.

While most of the U.S. airline industry has been sailing along for the past two years, Hawaiian Holdings, (NASDAQ: HA  ) has hit some rough patches. Unit revenue declined in 2013 due to a combination of overcapacity on some routes, and unfavorable currency fluctuations.

Asta Funding, Inc. was founded in 1994 and is based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tim Melvin]

There a lot of moving parts to Asta Funding (ASFI), but there appears to be a great deal of value that isn reflected in the current stock price. ASFI stock is trading at less than 65% of book value, but several of its debt collection assets are carried at zero cost basis and yet may have substantial value. The balance sheet is strong with more than $90 million in cash. ASFI has been moving into other businesses including disability claims to increase its growth opportunities over the next few years. It a fairly complex business, but it is very cheap — and the first sign of good news could send the shares a lot higher.

  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap debt collection stocks likeAsta Funding, Inc (NASDAQ: ASFI), Encore Capital Group, Inc (NASDAQ: ECPG) and Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc (NASDAQ: PRAA) could be the latest target of a government shakedown or crackdown as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said this week thatbefore it formally proposes any rules for debt collection, it wants to hear how collectors verify borrowers' information and communicate with consumers. In other words, debt collectors could be restricted from using text messages, social media or other Internet-based tools in their pursuit to collect debts. With about one in 10 Americans coming out of the financial crisis with some debt in collection, investing in small capdebt collection stocks has been profitable for investors. However, there is no timeline for when any new rules might be released for review or come into effect.

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm's management: the return on equity. The ratio has decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. Currently, a ROE of 45.9% is higher than all the 1,805 companies in the Diversified Industrials industry. Competitors such General Cable Corp. (BGC) has a very low ROE of 0.3% which is clearly not attractive. An alternative could be Belden Inc (BDC) with a positive ROE of 24%.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Rapier]

Refiners that have spun off midstream assets have done very well over the past years. Valero Energy Partners (NYSE: VLP) is up nearly 60 percent since its December IPO, Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP) has more than doubled since its July IPO (and is the! biggest ! gainer among MLPs year-to-date), and MPLX (NYSE: MPLX) — formed from Marathon Petroleum (NYSE: MPC) — is up 110 percent since its November 2012 IPO.

  • [By Aimee Duffy]

Master limited partnerships are not like other stocks, and the metrics we use to compare an MLP to its peers differ from the metrics we use to compare regular companies. For example, instead of the traditional P/E ratio, we emphasize MLP-specific metrics like distribution coverage ratio, and today's focus: price to distributable cash flow (P/DCF). I'll use MPLX (NYSE: MPLX  ) , Tesoro Logistics (NYSE: TLLP  ) , and Holly Energy Partners (NYSE: HEP  ) as our three examples.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Two things PSXP has going for it are that it has no debt, and is likely to be able to grow future distributions. But there are other midstream MLPs that have little or no debt and are also in position to grow distributions, but with a higher yield than PSXP. Marathon Petroleum’s (NYSE: MPC) midstream affiliate MPLX (NYSE: MPLX) also has essentially no debt, but a slightly higher yield of 2.9 percent.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

In Marathon's quarterly report, watch for how the refiner's relationship with spun-off midstream pipeline operator MPLX (NYSE: MPLX  ) is faring. With Marathon holding a majority stake in MPLX, its pipeline assets will play an increasingly important role in bringing midcontinent energy products to its refineries.

According to FICO (FICO), negative financial information -- late payments, bankruptcies, foreclosures, collection accounts, etc -- will generally disappear from your credit report after seven years. You probably already knew this: Personal finance experts talk about it often when discussing credit scores, bankruptcy, or a host of other money issues. But let's do the math. In 2008, the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression hit this country. It led to a record number of foreclosure filings beginning -- nearly 3.1 million filings that year. And the trend continued, with millions of homes foreclosed each subsequent year. Fast forward to 2015, when the first of the great recession foreclosures will start to vanish from credit reports. Credit scores improve as time elapses and your score can experience a big improvement when a major negative item drops off your report. According to Experian (EXPN) data provided to the New York Federal Reserve, the average credit score in the second quarter of 2014 reached 698, the highest level in the last 10 years. We can expect those averages to keep rising as the defaults, delinquencies and foreclosures of the Great Recession begin to be wiped from people's credit records. In addition, housing prices have started improving. The Case-Shiller house price index has experienced double-digit increases over the last few years. And, bank losses have improved. For example, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) has reduced its loan loss reserves for mortgages by $1 billion over the last 12 months alone. So, we are experiencing: Rapidly rising credit scores. Increasing property valuations. Improved bank balance sheets. Can you imagine what that means? Fire Up Those Consumer Credit Engines As memories of the Great Recession disappear from credit burea

Jupiterimages.com When it comes to understanding your credit, it can feel as complicated as trying to solve a Rubik's cube. Frustrated by this confusion, many consumers neglect their credit, which can have a devastating impact on their financial futures. A Consumer Action study recently revealed that 27 percent of Americans have never checked their credit report. That's alarming, because it's estimated that a large numbers of consumers have errors on their credit reports that could damage their credit. I found this out several years ago when I found an error -- a canceled account that was being reported as delinquent -- hurting my credit. In my research, I have identified three sneaky things that are hurting other people's credit, too. Surprisingly, they could be fixed in 15 minutes or less. First, you need to get your credit report, and you should go to AnnualCreditReport.com. From this site, you can request your free credit report once a year from the three major credit reporting agencies -- (Equifax (EFX), Experian (EXPGY) and TransUnion). You can also access your credit score there, but you'll have to pay a small fee. To get a free credit score, you can go to Credit.com or Creditkarma.com. Keep in mind that these two as well as a lot of other free sites offer a consumer education score, which isn't your actual FICO (FICO) score. This confused even me when I sought to find my real credit score. Your FICO score changes daily, so getting your credit scores from these free sites will give you a good gauge of approximately what your credit score is. 1.
